MANILA – AirAsia Philippines will continue to boost its manpower this year and will hire more pilots and crew, its executives confirmed on Thursday.

"AirAsia Philippines' decision to hire more flight crew and technical staff is our way of ensuring the best travel experience for all our guests. On top of being a prime mover in boosting economic recovery, we want to provide job opportunities to skilled and talented individuals who have the greatest potential in becoming aviation leaders," Public Affairs head, Steve Dailisan told the Philippine News Agency (PNA).

Currently, the local carrier employs 775 flight crew, 482 ground staff and 200 engineers.

An initial 260 new pilots, cabin, ground, and technical crew were hired in the first two months of 2023.

Deputy Spokesperson Carlo Carongoy told the PNA that AirAsia will hire more people this year, although the exact number is yet to be determined.

"The (figure) will be dependent on the operational needs of the company. Once we reactivate aircraft and we increase (flight) frequencies, definitely we will increase (manpower) again," he said.

It can be recalled that AirAsia Philippines had to let go of 624 employees because of the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic. In 2021, the carrier's chief executive officer Ricardo Isla announced that rehiring these employees, likely by the second quarter of 2022, is a top priority.

The low-cost carrier had 500,000 passengers in 2022, and this has already tripled as of Feb. 28, 2023 since forward bookings until December continue to increase, it said.

Airlines have been optimistic about the upward trend in travel as more borders open up and restrictions easing.

Another low-cost airline, Cebu Pacific (CEB), for instance, expects to reinstate all its pre-pandemic routes and capacity this month. An additional 140 new personnel are being eyed this year as CEB boosts its Clark hub. (PNA)
