MANILA – The Department of Health (DOH) offered 819 job vacancies in its different hospitals across the country during a job fair to mark National Health Workers' Day on Monday.

"Meron ho tayong (We have) 291 applications that we were able to receive for these 819 available plantilla [positions] that we offered to our fellowmen," DOH officer-in-charge Maria Rosario Vergeire said in a media forum on Tuesday.

"Wala ho tayong immediately hired kase ho ang mga plantilla sa Department of Health kailangan mag-qualify muna sa (We don't have immediately-hired applicants because the plantilla positions in the DOH must first qualify for the) different requirements of the Civil Service Commission," she added.

To fill up the vacancies in the DOH hospitals, Vergeire has instructed the Centers for Health Development and regional offices to conduct job fairs.

Aside from job hiring services, the DOH also offered free medical consultations and HIV screening at the DOH main office in Manila, which was participated in by 53 individuals.

Likewise, about 472 healthcare workers received pneumococcal vaccine while others enjoyed free haircut, massage, manicure and pedicure.

"Meron din po tayong Kadiwa na itinalaga dito kahapon (We also designated a Kadiwa here yesterday), in coordination with the Department of Agriculture and booths for SSS (Social Security System), PhilHealth, GSIS (Government Service Insurance System), Pag-IBIG ID cards application," Vergeire said.

She assured the health workers that the DOH will continue to exert all efforts to further capacitate them through the provision of scholarships and other professional opportunities as well as lobbying for salary standardization -- for both public and private sectors -- through legislation. (PNA)
