PH whips Indonesia in ASEAN Para Games 3x3 basketball

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia – The Philippines outclassed Indonesia, 11-5, at the start of the men’s 3x3 wheelchair basketball competition in the 12th ASEAN Para Games at the Elephant Hall 1 of Morodok Techo National Stadium here.

Led by Kenneth Christopher Tapia and Alfie Cabañog, the Filipinos broke away from a 5-all deadlock en route to victory.

Tapia finished with five points while Cabañog chipped in four points. John Rey Escalante and Rene Macabenguil had one point each.

“So far, so good,” coach Vernon Perea said after the game. He is assisted by Harry Joseph Solanoy, Yolanda Hernandez and Juanito Mingarine.

The Philippines, who settled for the silver medal in the 2022 edition held in Surakarta, Indonesia, will be playing host Cambodia, defending champion Thailand and Malaysia later in the day.

The women's team will also see action against Laos, Cambodia and Malaysia.

The medal round is scheduled for Saturday starting at 9:30 a.m.

Meanwhile, the 5x5 competition will start Sunday with Cambodia taking on Malaysia at 9 a.m. in the men's division.

Other matches pit the Philippines against Indonesia (10:30 a.m.) and Thailand against Malaysia (4 p.m.) while playing in the women's division are Cambodia against Thailand (1 p.m.) and the Philippines against Laos (2:30 p.m.).

The men's 5x5 team bagged the silver medal in 2022 while the women's team placed fourth behind Thailand, Cambodia and Laos.

The other members of the men's team are Mark Vincent Aguilar, Freddie Magdayo, Jannill Cañete, Clifford Trocino, Marlon Nacita, Jefferson Legacion, Kyle Carlo Carandang and Moises Escobar while the women's squad is composed of Patricia Camille Castro, Lois Jean Delos Reyes, Jocelyn Follero, Janet Briñas, Cathreen Gem Tanyag, Rhebilyn Aniban, Mary Joy Hernandez, Mylene Margaha, Ihoricel Panquico, Lorna Lilagan and Cecelia Wells.

The men's 5x5 team has qualified for the Hangzhou Asian Para Games after taking the bronze at the International Wheelchair Basketball Federation Asia-Oceania Championships in Suphanburi, Thailand in May. (PNA)
