MANILA – The Russian Embassy has led a double event for the birth of its most celebrated poet Aleksandr Sergeev Pushkin and the Russian Language Day, bringing to Manila a cultural performance from Moscow.

Every 6th of June, the nation celebrates the birth of Pushkin and its language, which is the mother tongue of some 300 million people across the world, said the embassy.

“We believe that Pushkin heritage serves as an important ground for mutual understanding and constructive dialogue between various states and peoples. Alexander Pushkin was not only a brilliant master of word but also a true patriot of his country,” Russian Ambassador to the Philippines Marat Pavlov said during a ceremony at Mehan Garden, Manila on Wednesday.

“The presence of our distinguished guests here, Philippine colleagues here, counterparts and friends once again proves the universality of cultural values that unite people of different nations,” he added.

A delegation from the Moscow City government joined and presented the Russian folk ensemble Lyubo-Milo.

A Russian poem reading segment by Regina Calimoso, Jun Bognot, and Carmencita Balubayan was also part of the program.

Joining Pavlov at the event are officials from the Manila City Hall, the Department of Tourism, and the National Anti-Poverty Commission; and Dr. Romel Cruz of Filipinos in the Former Soviet Republics, Inc., a 160-member strong group. (PNA)
