The strong diplomatic ties between the Philippines and South Korea will get a boost following the soft launch of the Philippines-Korea Society at the Makati Shangri-la on Thursday.

“The Philippines-Korea Society will definitely provide a great venue to discuss and exchange information on Korean culture, languages and business relations,” Korean Ambassador to the Philippines Han Dong-man said during the event.

About a hundred guests, including those from the business sector, the academe and media attended the affair that coincided with the end-of-the-year celebration.

Han said it “will be a stepping stone in strengthening the cooperation between our nations on cross-sectoral fields.”

He also expressed hope “that this cooperation will lead to the promotion of the two countries’ economic development, and to expanding our communication channels.”

“The establishment of the Philippines-Korea Society aims to maximize collaboration among members from multiple sectors, such as education, media, and business,” the Korean envoy said, adding that next year will be the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries.

It may be recalled that during the Korean War, the Philippines sent the Philippine Expedition Force to Korea (PEFTOK) to help South Korea stave off a communist invasion.

Incidentally, one of the PEFTOK troopers who fought the Korean War was then Major Fidel V. Ramos, who was later elected as the 12th President of the Philippines.
