Sen. Villar receives LPPCHEA painting from DENR-NCR officials

Senator Cynthia Villar, chair of the Senate Committee on Environment and Natural Resources, receives a LPPCHEA painting from DENR-NCR Lito Castaneda (left), Miss Aida Esquerra Chief Conservation and Development Division, DENR-NCR; and Ms. Lourdes Ferrer, Deputy Executive Director, Manila Bay Environmental Management Project, on Thursday (Feb. 16, 2017) during the clean-up along the shorelines of Las Pinas-Paranaque Critical Habitat and Eco-Tourism (LPPCHEA) with different agencies from the DPWH, DENR, Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), and private sector, as part of the celebration of the World Wetlands Day. Villar stressed the importance of protecting LPPCHEA and its 36 hectares mangrove forest. She cited the 2012 study conducted by the University of Cambridge, which showed that mangroves slow down the flow of water during the storm surges and reduce the damage in coastal areas. LPPCHEA is the 6th site in the Philippines under the Ramsar Convention list of Wetlands of International Importance because of its vital role as a coastal urban wetland and bird sanctuary within Metro Manila.
