DATU ODIN SINSUAT, Maguindanao – A peace advocate who has been campaigning for the ratification of the Bangsamoro Organic Law (BOL) was shot dead while inside a passenger van in Datu Unsay, Maguindanao Wednesday night.

Police identified the victim as lawyer Nasser Laban, 48, of Cotabato City.

Laban has been moving around, conducting fora and speaking about the BOL.

Senior Supt. Madzgani Mukaram, Maguindanao police director, said the victim was on board a passenger van going to Cotabato City with about 10 other passengers when shot at about 6 p.m.

Mukaram said while the van was traversing the isolated stretch of the national highway in Barangay Meta, Datu Unsay, one of the passengers asked the driver to pull over so he can disembark.

“Before the man alighted from the van, he shot Laban on his head using a .45-caliber pistol,” he said. The gunman then left on board a motorbike driven by an accomplice.

Kaliman Sangkad, 35, the van driver, was hit by stray bullets and is now in critical condition.

Mukaram said the family was surprised by the incident because, on top of being a known peace advocate, Laban has no known enemy. (PNA)
