BAGUIO CITY -- Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) organizations are encouraged to do volunteer work in selected drug rehabilitation centers to do their share in the peace and order and anti-illegal drugs drive of the government, an SK official said Thursday.
“This is our way of ensuring that we have a part in the maintenance of peace and order. It is the least that we can do since we cannot apprehend criminals as we also need to consider the safety of the young people," SK Baguio Federation president, Councilor Levy Lloyd Orcales, told the Philippine News Agency (PNA).
Orcales, who authored Resolution 394 series of 2018, said the measure encourages the youth to boost their participation in nation-building by performing an important role.
“The volunteer programs that will be conducted will increase the youth’s awareness on the ill effects of illegal drug use and substance abuse,” he said. "This will ensure that the youth will no longer be involved in any drug-related activity.”
Orcales said the city has a day-time population of 450,000, one-fourth of which, belongs to the youth sector.
He said experience is a good teacher and by personally seeing, meeting and talking to the clients of drug rehabilitation, the youth can learn more, which will convince them not to be involved in illegal drugs.
Orcales, earlier, noted the importance of the youth by making their places safe by serving as “human CCTV (closed circuit television).”
“With the advancement of technology, the youth uses the Internet as their medium to monitor and report vital information on crimes," he said in a previous interview with PNA.
The resolution cites a provision in the 1987 Constitution, which states that "The State recognizes the vital role of the youth in nation-building and shall promote and protect their physical, moral, spiritual, intellectual, and social well-being. It shall inculcate in the youth patriotism and nationalism, and encourage their involvement in public and civic affairs.” (PNA)
