Village official shot dead

ZAMBOANGA CITY -- The police have launched a manhunt operation against the gunman behind the killing of a barangay councilman in the province of Basilan, an official disclosed Tuesday.

Supt. Jerome Afuyog, Isabela City police chief, identified the subject of the manhunt operation as Ben Apas, of Sibago Island, Mohammad Ajul, Basilan.

Afuyog said Apas has been identified as the alleged gunman who shot and killed Barangay Councilor Alasin Sali Kaya, 45, of Tampalan, Malamawi Island, Isabela City, the capital of Basilan province.

He said Apas shot Kaya at around 8:20 a.m. Monday in Barangay Tampalan and fled after the crime.

He added that Kaya, who had multiple gunshot wounds, was rushed to a hospital in mainland Isabela City for medication.

But he said Kaya expired later Monday while being transported to a hospital in Zamboanga City.

He said the motive of the incident has yet to be ascertained although initially, it is believed to involve money. (PNA)
