Gawilan wins 2nd gold in ASEAN Para Games

KUALA LUMPUR -- Swimmer Ernie Gawilan collected his second gold medal on Friday in the 9th ASEAN Para Games here.

Gawilan clocked two minutes and 50.13 seconds to rule the men's 200-meter individual medley S8 category in the competition held at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil.

Malaysian James Wong Tien Yu bagged the silver medal in 2:50.98 while Vietnamese Dang Van Cong took the bronze medal in 3:20.05.

In the men's individual medley S9 category, Arnel Alba finished fourth with a time of 3:04.21.

Indonesian Jendi Pangabean won the gold in 2:33.37, Vietnamese Nguyen Ngoc Thiet got the silver in 2:46.92, while Vietnamese Nguyen Hoang Nha took the bronze in 2:51.60.

Gawilan had earlier won the 400-meter freestyle and has captured the silver medal in the 100-meter butterfly. He also won two bronze medals coming from the men's 4x100 medley relay 34 points and the 4x100 freestyle relay 34 points.

The other members of the team are Alba, Gary Bejino and Roland Subido.

Bejino also won the gold medal in the men's 400-meter freestyle S7 class, aside from pocketing the bronze in the 100-meter backstroke S7 category.

Subido, on the other hand, won the silver medal in the 400-meter freestyle S9 category and the bronze medal in the 100-meter backstroke S9 category.

Claire Calizo bagged the silver medal in the women's 200-meter freestyle S14 category and also got the bronze in the 100-meter freestyle S14 category.

The Philippine swimming team has won a total of three golds, three silvers and five bronzes. (PNA)
