ZAMBOANGA CITY -- The rehabilitation of the 4.2-hectare sports complex is set to be completed by the first quarter of 2018.

Paul Lagonera, project in-charge of the RCDG Construction firm, on Friday said the rehabilitation of the facility is already 60 percent complete.

The RCDG Construction firm is undertaking the rehabilitation project under the supervision of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).

“Hopefully by early next year, we can already hold athletic activities at the sports complex,” Lagonera said.

Among the unfinished portion of the sports complex is the rubberized track oval and soccer football field and finishing touches on its bleacher.

Lagonera said the German supplier, Regupor, of the synthetic rubber on Monday started the installation of the initial layer--the shock pad of the rubber--in preparation to the installation of the final coating.

He said they are also waiting for the arrival from Germany of the synthetic grass to complete the rehabilitation of the complex’s soccer football field.

The contract cost of the rehabilitation of the sports complex is PPhP187 million. The rehab works started in March last year.

The sports complex was damaged after it was used as the main evacuation center to some 120,000 people displaced during the 21-day siege in September 2013. (PNA)
