'Vinta' affected families now at 143K: NDRRMC

MANILA -- As reports from the field continue to come in, the National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (NDRRMC) reported Wednesday that the number of families affected by "Vinta" has now climbed to 143,188 families or 673,429 persons residing in 1,140 barangays in Mimaropa, Regions 7, 9, 10, 11, 12, ARMM and Caraga.

NDRRMC executive director Ricardo Jalad said that of the number, 23,775 families or 111,641 persons are housed in 231 evacuation centers, while 5,983 families or 29,592 individuals are being assisted outside evacuation tents.

The NDRRMC placed the death toll at 164, while 176 were reported missing.

Jalad, however, said that fatalities are still undergoing verification by authorities.

Jalad added that 2,663 houses -- 1,654 totally and 1,009 partially -- were damaged in Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon and Palawan (Mimaropa), Regions 9, 10, 11, and ARMM.

Meanwhile, four areas including Tambulig, Zamboanga Del Sur; Bacolod, Lanao Del Norte; Lanao Del Norte and Labason, Zamboanga Del Norte were declared under a state of calamity due to the severe effects of Vinta.

Infrastructure damage at Region 9 and 10 was placed at PHP167,710,000. This can be broken down into PHP17,710,000 for Region 9 and PHP150,000,000 for Region 10. (PNA)
