Drug suspect killed, cop wounded in Cavite encounter

BACOOR CITY, Cavite - A notorious hard drug suspect was killed  in a shootout with city police during the serving of arrest warrant on him in his house in Barangay (village) Talaba here Thursday morning.

Bacoor City chief of police Superintendent Francisco Lucena III identified the slain drug suspect as Jay-Jay Mercado, a Barangay Talaba resident.

Lucena said that combined elements of the Bacoor City police force served the search warrant against Mercado for violation of Republic Act 9165 or the “Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act” and Republic Act 10591or the “Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act”  at the his abode in Barangay Talaba 2.

As the police team knocked at the door, the suspect Mercado fired a shot in the direction to the door hitting PO1 Ashley Vergel, a member of the operating team,  on his arm.

A gun battle ensued between the police operatives and the suspect who had a short firearm.

Police tried to negotiate for the surrender of the suspect, but the latter resisted and continued firing at the police team, prompting  the law enforcers to fire back and hit the suspect who died instantly, Lucena said.

Meanwhile, PO1 Vergel was rushed to Saint Dominic Medical Center for emergency medical treatment. (PNA)
