BOCAUE, Bulacan -- The daily traffic congestion at the Bocaue tollgate of the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) will soon be resolved with the establishment of another tollgate exit in this town.

Rodrigo Franco, president and chief executive officer of NLEX Corp., confirmed on Monday that the construction of the new Bocaue tollgate exit at the Taal-Tambubong Bridge is expected to start in the second quarter of the year.

Franco said the traffic congestion at the Bocaue tollgate is due to the annual increase of vehicular traffic flow along the narrow Gov. F. Halili Avenue from Bocaue to Santa Maria towns.

Bocaue Mayor Eleanor Villanueva-Tugna told the Philippine News Agency (PNA) that Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade had already approved its construction last year and is just awaiting the completion of its detailed engineering design.

“Decongesting the Bocaue tollgate with its traffic woes will spur economic developments of the town, and to further ease the traffic flow, the local government unit of Bocaue is now spearheading for the procurement of the right of way for the construction of a service road adjacent to the North Luzon Expressway,” Tugna said.

Bocaue is well known for its July fluvial procession of the Mahal na Poon na Krus sa Wawa. It is also where the Philippine Arena, the world's largest indoor dome complex, is located.

“Eliminating the traffic congestion at the Bocaue tollgate of NLEX will help boost economic development in the municipality by tapping the potentials of these two tourist attractions and may help revive the town’s now sleeping embroidery and garment industries,” Tugna said. (PNA)
