MANILA -- Senate broke away in the final half-hour to repulse Malacañang-PSC, 84-64, to claim its first UNTV Cup title at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City on Monday night.

The Defenders outscored the Kamao, 22-13, in the second quarter to turn a 17-21 deficit after the first quarter to a 39-34 lead by halftime.

Senate then continued the domination in the second half, eventually going on a 25-14 fourth quarter to secure the win.

“We played as a team and I think that was the key,” said team captain, Senator Juan Edgardo "Sonny" Angara, whose team completed a 2-0 sweep of the best-of-three series to capture the championship in just its first try.

Malacañang-PSC, on the other hand, ended up as bridesmaid anew in its third finals appearance, also losing last year's finals to erstwhile champion PNP. (PNA)
