LEGAZPI CITY -- At least six schools with 102 classrooms still occupied by Mayon evacuees will delay their closing of classes to give way to make-up sessions, the Department of Education’s (DepEd) office in Bicol has said.
DepEd-Bicol spokesperson, May Jumamil, said in an interview Thursday their Albay Division had already requested for a delay in the closing of classes in schools located 6-9 km. away from Mayon Volcano.
Jumamil said the extension of classes would not go beyond April 15. The official closing is April 6.
“They requested for extension because they have to hold make-up classes for the days that classes were suspended due to recent floodings, heavy rains and the eruption of Mayon,” she said.
Cedric Daep, chief of the Albay Public Safety and Emergency Management Office (Apsemo), said schools still occupied by Mayon evacuees are the Tabaco National High School, San Antonio Elementary School and Mayon Elementary School in Tabaco City, with 42 classrooms occupied; Malilipot Central School and San Jose Elementary School in Malilipot, with 40 classrooms; Anoling Elementary School in Camalig, with 14 classrooms; and Muladbucad Elementary School in Guinobatan, with six classrooms.
“The evacuees in these schools are not yet allowed to decamp as their homes are located inside the permanent danger zone and the extended danger zone,” Daep said.
He said at least 1,641 families, or 6,484 persons, would remain in the evacuation centers until Mayon’s alert is further lowered. (PNA)
