ANGELES CITY -- On the eve of Earth Hour 2018, Mayor Edgardo Pamintuan on Friday encouraged all residents of this highly-urbanized city to step up their energy conservation efforts to combat climate change.
Pamintuan is expected to grace SM City Clark’s observance of Earth Hour on Saturday as a resource speaker to call on households and businesses in the city to take a stand against the threat of global warming.
Angeles City on Friday began observing Earth Hour, as government offices, barangay councils, public and private schools, mall and supermarket managements, market associations and hospitals in the city took time to clean up their surroundings from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m.
The Earth Hour, which this year carries the theme #Connect2Earth, is a global environmental event organized by the World Wide Fund (WWF) to inspire and empower individuals, organizations and governments to take actions to preserve the environment.
This year’s celebration marks the 10th anniversary of the campaign, which also focuses on protecting biodiversity from climate change.
In this light, Pamintuan also urged all Angeleños to join the annual Global Earth Hour to be held at The Meeting Place, SM City Clark at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday.
“These are small sacrifices that we can contribute to save our planet. This is our way, our collaborative stand to spread awareness about global warming and environment conservation,” he said.
Recently, the Angeles City government, through its key planning team against climate change, participated in a four-day local climate change action planning workshop organized by the United Nations Habitat Philippines.
The capacity building activity aimed at guiding the city government in formulating its own priority action plan to mitigate the effects of climate change.
“These efforts symbolize our solidarity with the world in the campaign to fight the adverse effects of climate change,” he added.(PNA)
