DUMAGUETE CITY, Negros Oriental -- The Philippine National Police’s (PNP) office in Negros Oriental province is on full alert as it started on Palm Sunday its operation plan in line with the observance of the Holy Week this week.

Senior Supt. Edwin Portento, provincial police director, said Wednesday that police personnel are reporting for duty “full force”, with no day off, during the entire week.

Policemen have been deployed to strategic areas where people are expected to converge for the religious observance, such as sea ports, airport, churches, passenger bus and jeepney terminals, and malls or shopping centers, he said.

Tourist destinations, such as beach resorts, are also being monitored with the influx of domestic and international tourists during the Holy Week, he added.

Vital installations are also under tight security to avert possible attacks with the upcoming 49th anniversary of the New People’s Army (NPA), the armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP), said Portento.

Tighter security will be in place, especially on Holy Thursday and Good Friday when people will be attending the traditional activities, such as the Visita Iglesia, Via Crucis (Way of the Cross) and the solemn processions, he added.

The PNP provincial director has cautioned the public against bringing valuables during these days.

At the same time, he also warned them to secure their homes to prevent break-ins and other burglaries, although he assured that the police have received only minimal reports of “Akyat Bahay” incidents here. (PNA)
