CALASIAO, Pangasinan -- The local government unit here, in coordination with Calasiao Police Station (CPS), vowed to fully implement ordinance against illegal motorcycle mufflers.

Mayor Joseph Arman Bauzon mandated the CPS to enforce the ban against open pipe mufflers based on municipal ordinance no. 7 series of 2013 prohibiting driving of motorcycle, or motorized tricycle, within municipality of Calasiao without the customarily installed silencer components in the exhaust pipe of the motorcycle engines.

Supt. Charlie Umayam, chief of CPS, said the ordinance has been fully implemented following several complaints from residents on the disturbance and stress caused by the noise of open pipe mufflers.

“Some residents complained how their children could not concentrate on their studies and sleep due to the loud noise caused by these mufflers,” he said in an interview with the Philippine News Agency (PNA) on Monday,

Umayam further said they confiscated and destroyed 152 open pipe mufflers here from January to March 26 this year.

Aside from the muffler’s confiscation, he added the ordinance imposes fines of PHP500 for the first offense, PHP1,000 for second offense, and PHP1,500 and 10 days imprisonment for the third and succeeding offense.

Meanwhile, Bauzon also mandated the police to search for the source of these open pipe mufflers in the town, as he urged the Sangguniang Bayan (SB) to pass an ordinance that would also penalize the manufacturers and retailers.

“Even if we do this activity all the time, if the source is still there, we will just keep on doing this so we need to cut the source itself,” he said.

Vice Mayor Mahadeva Das Mesina assured that SB members would tackle the request of Bauzon.  (PNA)
