Community responders to train on first aid, basic life support

ILOILO CITY -- Community responders in barangays prone to vehicular accidents will be prioritized in a series of first aid and basic life support training to be conducted by the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) starting May.

CDRRMO administrative and training officer Fenan S. Sollano said Friday community responders are expected to “stabilize the patient, give them first aid” while waiting for the Iloilo City Emergency Responder to arrive during vehicular accidents.

Each training session will run for two days. Participants will be oriented on first aid, medical emergencies and condition techniques on the first day and basic life support procedures and cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the second day.

There will be a demonstration and practical evaluation after every session, Sollano said.

Target participants include barangay tanods, Barangay Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council members, health workers, and youth sector representatives.

Personnel of the Philippine National Police, Public Safety and Transportation Management Office (PSTMO), Transportation Management and Traffic Regulation Office (TMTRO), City Environment and Natural Resources (CENRO) and General Services Office (GSO), particularly street sweepers and selected staff of the City Engineer’s Office, will also undergo training.

Participants in the first training session on May3-4 will come from barangays Ungka, Buhang, Lanit, Tacas, Bito-on, Tabuc Suba, Dungon A, Dungon B in Jaro district; and Sto. Domingo, Dulonan, Mohon, Sooc, Yulo Drive in Arevalo district.

The second session, slated on July 5-6, will cover responders from barangays San Rafael, Q. Abeto Hibao-an Sur, Hibao-an Norte, Calahunan, Tabucan, Taft North, Old Airport in Mandurriao district; and Lapuz Norte and Mansaya in Lapuz district.

The third session on Sept. 6-7 will involve responders from barangays MH del Pilar, Calumpang, North Baluarte, South Baluarte in Molo District; and San Agustin, Gloria, Liberation, Martin Delgado in City Proper district .

The training for PSTMO and PNP personnel will be held on May 24-25 and for the TMTRO on July 26-27.

The CENRO, PNP, City Engineer’s Office will undergo training on Sept. 20- 21 while the GSO and City Social Welfare and Development Office will be on October 4-5.

The training is part of the activities undertaken by the CDRRMO through the “Kahublagan sa Barangay para sa Lapnagon nga Kahandaan sa Kalamidad (KABALAKA)” Program to improve disaster preparedness and awareness in the community. (PNA)
