LAOAG CITY -- A Commission on Elections (Comelec) official has reminded candidates in the upcoming Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections to stick to the maximum PHP5 expenditure per registered voter, as stipulated in the Fair Elections Act.
“Under the Fair Elections Act, campaign overspending may result in disqualification from holding office,” Robert Fernandez, the Municipal Election Officer of Sarrat town, said Wednesday as he explained several guidelines from the Comelec that must be followed by aspiring candidates.
Fernandez noted that the spending limit is based on the number of registered voters and not the population.
The Comelec in the province has warned candidates it would strictly monitor compliance with the election campaign rule on spending.
The official campaign period for qualified candidates has been set on May 4-12.
The Comelec also reiterated that the only lawful election materials are pamphlets, leaflets, stickers and posters that measure no more than “2 feet by 3 feet.”
It said that posting of campaign materials outside of the common poster areas is prohibited.
The common poster areas prescribed by Comelec are often located in village halls and private places the owners have given their consent to for use by candidates.
Putting posters in government vehicles, patrol cars, as well as highways, walls of public buildings, electric posts and trees is also prohibited. (PNA)
