BORACAY ISLAND -- Nineteen jobseekers were hired on-the-spot during a one-day special job fair for workers who were displaced from Boracay island, held in Kalibo, Aklan on Thursday.

This was reported by Salome Siaton, Assistant Regional Director of the Department of Labor and Employment 6 (Western Visayas) in a media interview Friday afternoon.

Based on the data, 17 were hired on-the-spot by local companies, and two by overseas companies.

The job fair, which was spearheaded by DOLE-6, in partnership with the provincial government of Aklan, offered a total of 8,488 jobs from 28 participating companies.

Of the number, 21 companies were for local employment with 6,616 vacancies, and seven for overseas employment, offering 1,870 jobs.

DOLE-6 was unable to immediately provide data on the number of jobseekers who registered for the fair.

Siaton said those who were not hired that day may still be absorbed by the companies in the coming days after further evaluation.

For those who failed to go to the job fair, she said they will conduct a job and business fair dubbed, “Trabaho, Negosyo, Kabuhayan” program, in Malay town this May, to be spearheaded by the town’s Public Employment and Service Office.

She said that different government agencies will join to provide work and business opportunities, as well as training to displaced workers, among them the Department of Trade and Industry and Technical Education and Skills Development Authority. (PNA)
