SAN JOSE De BUENAVISTA, Antique -- Antiqueños will again test the prowess of lifesavers all over the country with its second staging of the “Great Titan”, a beach and pool challenge.

“Great Titan” is organized by members of the Philippine Life Saving Society, Inc. (PLSSI), a non-government organization, slated May 15-17 this year. PLLSI aims to reduce drowning incidents and prevent injuries in the aquatic environment.

Antique Board Member Pio Sumande, center head of the PLSSI in the province, said that participants will compete in the cruise channel swim from Barangay Butuan to the white-sand beach Nogas island in Anini-y during the beach event.

“There will be a one mile cruise channel swim of participants without life jackets to Nogas island,” Sumande said.

A 100-meter and 200-meter combination of run-swim-run to test their prowess are expected in the pool event.

“The pool event is also to test how fast a lifesaver could rescue a drowning victim,” he said.

He said that the challenge will be joined by 50 members of the PLSSI who will come from different parts of the country like Manila and Siquijor.

They will converge on May 15 for a welcome dinner by Antique Governor Rhodora J. Cadiao.

The contest will start the next day at the Orr Beach Resort in Tobias Fornier for the pool event.

The beach event will be on May 17 at the adjacent town of Anini-y.

He said that this is actually the second time that Antique will host this challenge, the first one was in 2015.

Sumande added that the winners would represent the Philippines in the International Life Saving Standard World Championship in Adelaide City in Australia this November. (PNA)
