LOS BAŇOS, Laguna – Los Baños Mayor Caesar Perez on Thursday evening urged village leaders and political bets in the May 14 synchronized Barangay and Sanggunian Kabataan elections to help address the ill effects of climate change and focus on waste management in their localities.

Perez graced the gathering of the officials and members of the Laguna Thursday Civic Club (LTCC) at the Timog Bar and Resto here as he noted that political platforms of local aspirants mostly focus on pledges for basic services.

“Ang tunay na paglilingkod sa bayan ay ang pagkakaroon ng tunay na malasakit sa kalikasan at n gating kapaligiran (True public service calls for real and genuine concern for care and protection of the environment and our surroundings),” Perez remarked.

"Our lives rest upon how we protect and conserve our natural resources, our environment and keep our communities clean and rid our surroundings from garbage."

The mayor pitched the call to address impacts on climate change and proper waste management in reference to the town’s leadership to sustain Los Baños’ claim as the country’s pioneering “Science and Nature City” by virtue of Presidential Proclamation 349 in August 2000.

The town also pioneered as the country’s first local government unit (LGU) which crafted its local law banning the use of plastic bags in supermarkets and grocery stores and encouraged the environment-friendly materials as shopping bags.

Perez also lauded efforts of the LTCC for their community outreach and socio-civic projects to uplift the lives of the poor people and countryside folks in the province.

LTCC president Jose Malubay Jr. thanked the mayor for his time despite the busy schedule.

Also gracing the occasion was Laguna police provincial director Police Senior Supt. Kirby Jhon Brion Kraft who expressed support to the LTCC community outreach undertakings, medical and dental missions, free circumcision, eye check-ups and charity works.

Malubay also announced that preparations have been firmed up for the Medical and Dental missions, free circumcision, eye-check up and free eyeglasses for the indigent residents of eight barangays in Nagcarlan town in Laguna on May 19.

Other future undertakings include the “Balik Eskwela” school supplies distribution in the public schools in Pila, Laguna by June or July. (PNA)
