SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union -- The Police Regional Office in Ilocos Region (PRO-1) has declared that 99.93 percent of barangays (villages) in the region are cleared of illegal drugs.

Regional Director of PRO-1 Police Chief Supt. Romulo Sapitula, in a phone interview Thursday, said the Barangay Anti-Drug Abuse Council (BADAC) has verified that 2,899 out of 2,901 barangays are drug-cleared.

“The two remaining barangays are located in Ilocos Sur, which are still categorized as seriously affected,” said Sapitula.

Meanwhile, the ongoing anti-illegal drugs campaign of PRO1 has yielded 39,502 drug surrenderees, among which 36,158 are users, while the remaining 3,344 are pushers, said Sapitula.

He said from the total number of surrenderees, 29,191 individuals have undergone Recovery Wellness Program, spearheaded by the Philippine National Police (PNP) and local government units through their local Social Welfare Development Offices and health units.

“Since July 1, 2016 up to date, the PRO1 has arrested 3,217 illegal drug personalities,” he added. (PNA)
