Peso, stocks bounce back

MANILA -- Local markets woke up on Tuesday as the Philippine peso appreciated against the US dollar and stocks rose above the 7,600 level.

The local unit closed at 52.40 from 52.58 a day ago.

Meanwhile, the benchmark Philippine Stock Exchange index closed the session up 1.4 percent, or 106.15 points, to close at 7,685.76 points, while the broader All Shares index was also up 1.06 percent to 4,664.29 points.

All sub indices tracked the main stocks gauge, led by Holding Firms gaining 2.32 percent, followed by Services, 1.58 percent; Mining and Oil 1.11 percent; Industrial, 0.92 percent; Financials, 0.83 percent; and Property, 0.06 percent.

A total of 1.983 billion shares, valued at PHP.5.4 billion, changed hands.

A total of 112 gainers outnumbered 84 losers, while 53 shares were unchanged. (PNA)
