MANILA -- The Office of the Ombudsman on Wednesday commended the Philippine National Police (PNP) for immediately arresting the suspect in the killing of an assistant special prosecutor last Monday.

Lawyer Madona Joy Ednaco-Tanyag was stabbed thrice by the suspect, Angelito Avenido Jr., in front of a lottery outlet along Visayas Ave. in Barangay Vasra, Quezon City at about 11:20 a.m. on Monday. She was rushed to the East Avenue Medical Center but was declared dead on arrival.

Operatives of the Quezon City Police District apprehended Avenido in a follow-up operation in Barangay Culiat, Quezon City Monday night.

In a statement on Wednesday, Ombudsman Conchita Carpio-Morales lauded "the Philippine National Police for its immediate handling of the senseless killing of ASP Madonna Joy Tanyag, which resulted in the immediate apprehension of the killer.”

“ASP Tanyag is known to her colleagues as a hardworking and tough prosecutor handling high-profile cases,” Carpio-Morales added.

The Ombudsman also expressed anew its condolences to the Tayag family.
