IMUS CITY, Cavite -- The Cavite Police Provincial Office has warned residents here that it is intensifying its crackdown on street "tambay."
At least 100 “tambays” have already been apprehended since Monday in compliance with the directives of President Rodrigo R. Duterte to clear the streets of vagrants and loiterers.
Provincial Police Director Senior Supt. William Segun has reminded on Wednesday communities to observe existing municipal ordinances on curfew hours and vagrancy, and prohibitions on drinking sessions in public places and on half-naked men wandering the streets.
Segun reported that as of 10 p.m. on June 18 onwards, around 100 persons were already rounded up for violation of national laws and city/town ordinances during the simultaneous province-wide “tambay” round-up operations.
Cavite PNP has recorded around 66 persons caught drinking in public places; 14 for violation of curfew hours; three for violation of RA 9165 or the “Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act”; three for violation on PD 1602 or the law on illegal gambling and two persons who were caught half-naked.
The arrested persons were brought to the different police stations for proper disposition.
The ongoing “tambay” (loitering) crackdown was enforced on Duterte's order for the police to go after those whom he viewed as “potential troublemakers for the public" as there are existing city ordinances against drinking on the streets, roaming half-naked, urinating in public, and making too much noise.
Segun said the arrested persons were from the cities of Trece Martires, Bacoor, Tagaytay and General Trias and the towns of General Mariano Alvarez and Rosario.
He also said that the checkpoint operations in strategic areas in Cavite’s seven cities and 16 towns have been sustained to maintain peace and order in the province. (Dennis Abrina/PNA)
