MANILA -- Around 1,200 runners from 33 government agencies and disaster management institutions participated in Sunday's "Run for Resilience", the kick-off activity for this year's National Disaster Resilience Month.

The fun run which included 3-km, 5-km, and 10-km races was conducted by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (NDRRMC), through the Office of Civil Defense, at the Parade Ground, Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City.

Delfin Lorenzana, Department of National Defense (DND) Secretary and concurrent NDRRMC chair, spearheaded the activity with other DND undersecretaries and assistant secretaries along with the heads of the invited agencies.

“The responsibility in disaster risk management does not lie on DND, NDRRMC, and OCD alone. It is everyone’s concern, hence citizens, political leaders, government institutions, private organizations, and civil society organizations must work toward having a resilience nation,” Lorenzana said.

Executive Order No. 29 dated June 28, 2017 mandates the observance the National Disaster Resilience Month throughout the country through the conduct of activities relative to building disaster resilience covering the four thematic areas: disaster prevention and mitigation, preparedness, response and rehabilitation and recovery.

The "Run for Resilience" is the opening activity of the NDRM 2018 conducted simultaneously across all regions through the OCD Regional Offices.

With the theme: "KATATAGAN SA KALAMIDAD ay Makakamtan Kapag Sapat ang Kaalaman sa Kahandaan", several activities are lined-up for this month as part of the continuous efforts to promote and build national resilience.

The resilience mobile photography, essay writing contest, and poster making contest are among the scheduled activities at the national level. (PNA)
