BORACAY ISLAND -- Despite the rainy weather, workers of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) go on with their roadworks here to hasten the rehabilitation of this closed top resort tourist spot.

"As much as possible, if we can still work, we will do it. We are finishing our remaining clearing operations and we are already starting our road improvements," Al Fruto, Assistant Regional Director of DPWH in Western Visayas, said in an interview on Saturday.

Fruto said DPWH personnel even extended their working hours for two straight nights now. Working during the night is ideal because only a few vehicles pass by the roads.

He added that his team had already proposed and discussed with the Boracay police a traffic scheme that they want to implement in the island to avoid hindrance to their roadworks.

"The traffic scheme will help alleviate the issue on traffic here. We are proposing for a re-routing and some roads will only be one-way," he said.

The DPWH is working on the improvement of the 4.1-kilometer road on the island with an allotted budget of PHP490 million.

The department is targeting to complete the road-widening project before the island's reopening on October 26.

"Four months is very very close, but we will do everything to finish our work," Fruto said. (PNA)
