MANILA -- A doctor has specified ways to prevent epidemic-prone influenza, especially with the onset of the rainy season.

In a reminder, Manila East Medical Center Dr. Claro Cayanan said the easiest way to avoid getting the virus is by washing hands thoroughly before eating and after using the restroom.

Other ways include avoiding touching the eyes, nose, and mouth to prevent the spread of the virus.

The former Doctor on Board host, whose show got a Catholic Mass Media Award for being best educational program, also advised the public to stay away from those who have the virus.

The doctor added the public should maintain a healthy body by having a good night's sleep, eating nutritious food, and drinking enough water every day to fight off potential transmission.

For those already carrying the disease, Cayanan stressed they should cover their nose and mouth when sneezing and coughing, and properly throw away their used tissue.

During rainy days, the internal medicine specialist also suggested bringing an umbrella, raincoat, or jacket to avoid getting drenched, which might weaken the body's resistance.

Those already affected should stay at home and rest to avoid contaminating others.

Influenza has the following symptoms: chills, body aches--especially in muscles and joints--runny and stuffy nose, cough, loss of appetite, headache, vomiting, diarrhea, and rashes.

The symptoms usually manifest within one to two days upon contracting the virus.

The disease is often transmitted through the air, particularly in crowded areas.

Despite the virus' short lifespan, Cayanan stressed it could cause death if not addressed early.

The disease is often prevalent during the wet season or cold season. (PNA)
