TACURONG CITY--Police said they are in pursuit of gunmen, who shot dead an off-duty cop along the national highway here Sunday.

Supt. Joefil Siason, Tacurong police director, identified the slain cop as Police Officer 2 Rolly Kamid, of Barangay Grenio, this city, but assigned with the Lambayong municipal police office in Sultan Kudarat province.

“We are trying our best to determine the motive of the killing and identify the culprits behind the incident soonest,” he told newsmen in an interview Monday.

Siason said Kamid, 51, was in civilian clothes and driving his motorbike from Lambayong to this city around 8:20 a.m. when unidentified gunmen shot him using .45-caliber pistols in Barangay San Antonio.

“Our investigators are also trying to determine if the victim was shot by suspects onboard a separate motorbike or if he was ambushed by his killers waiting for him along the road,” Siason added.

Kamid, the detachment officer of Maligaya Community Police Assistance Center in Lambayong, suffered three fatal gunshot wounds and died on the spot.

Responding Tacurong police personnel found Kamid sprawled and bloodied along the highway as his killers fled toward an unknown direction.

Police recovered the victim’s backpack containing his police issued 9mm service pistol, wallet, crash helmet and other valuables. Several empty shells for .45-caliber pistol were also found at the crime scene.

Police said the victim was on his way home to watch the scheduled Pacquiao-Matthysse boxing bout on television when he was waylaid. (PNA)
