MANILA -- The Philippine Federation of Japan Alumni (PHILFEJA) is set to receive the Foreign Minister's Commendation on July 24, the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) announced Friday.

This is in recognition of PHILFEJA’s "vital contributions" to advancing Japan-Philippines relations by connecting Filipino and Japan alumni and promoting the values of Japanese education in the Philippines.

PHILFEJA, an umbrella organization connecting various Japanese scholarship alumni organizations in the Philippines, was founded in 1976 under the guidance of the late Ambassador Jose Laurel III.

The Foreign Minister's Commendation is awarded to individuals and groups with outstanding achievements in international fields, to acknowledge their contributions to the promotion of ties between Japan and other countries.

In its website, the MOFA listed 205 individuals and 48 other groups receiving the award.

In 2016, representatives of PHILFEJA and former Filipino Japan scholars met with Their Majesties, the Emperor and Empress of Japan, during their state visit to the Philippines.

In a statement, the Embassy of Japan in Manila extended its "sincere congratulations" to PHILFEJA, expressing hopes that it will continue to bring Filipino and Japanese alumni together to develop a stronger appreciation of Japanese education among more locals in the country. (PNA)
