CEBU CITY -- Former Cebu congressman and governor Vicente “Tingting” de la Serna died of lung cancer past midnight Saturday.

He was 66. He died just 12 days before his 67th birthday on September 13.

De la Serna’s wake will only be held for a day at his residence in Sto. Niño Village in Barangay Banilad, this city, as his remains will be cremated on Sunday.

De la Serna was among the prominent anti-Marcos activists in Cebu in the 1980s. After the 1986 Edsa Revolution, he was appointed by late President Corazon Aquino as OIC-Mayor of Mandaue City.

He was then elected as a member of the 8th Congress, representing the 6th District of Cebu from 1987 to 1992.

De la Serna, who was also popular among the masses for championing the causes of the poor and the marginalized, afterwards took the reins of the Cebu Capitol and served as governor until 1995.

He also served as deputy executive secretary of former President Joseph Estrada. (PNA)
