MANILA -- Green Archers United secured the WFL Elite Futbol League title after beating Army, 2-1, at the La Salle Zobel Football Field in Muntinlupa on Sunday.
Only needing a draw to clinch the title with one match to spare, GAU went for the kill at home despite Army threatening early in the second half.
Joel Okono scored the opener for GAU in the 16th minute off a feed from the left flank by Tating Pasilan.
Roynick Bedia equalized for Army early in the second half with a header from a right flank cross.
Cristian Zubiri won it for GAU at the hour mark as he headed in a John Gumban cross.
GAU moved up to 23 points after nine matches, more than enough to beat Ateneo, which despite having two matches at hand can only finish with a maximum of 20 points, for the championship of the de facto second tier league.
Ateneo's scheduled match at Stallion Laguna B, as well as the Adamson-Fleet Marine clash, were postponed. (PNA)
