MANILA -- Globe Telecom launched the embedded Subscriber Identification Module (eSIM) in the Philippine market to enhance the mobile experience of its subscribers.

The eSIM is a virtual SIM that can be an alternative to the physical, plastic SIM cards that are currently being used by smartphone users.

“With the introduction of eSIM, Globe further strengthens its position as the country's mobile innovation leader. This new technology enhances our customers' experience and the way they live their digital lifestyle. The eSIM is also consistent with our initiative to reduce plastic use as part of our sustainability commitments,” Issa Guevarra-Cabreira, Globe Senior Vice President and head of the Consumer Mobile Business, said in a statement late Monday.

The SIM is pre-installed in mobile and wearable devices and is equipped with automatic activation without the need for a physical SIM. Its digital management capability and automatic syncing feature also enable customers to use and manage multiple devices.

Globe is currently conducting its tests of the eSIM technology with selected mobile devices, such as iPhone Xs, Xs Max, and XR; Apple Watch; and Huawei Watch.

Postpaid subscribers can avail of iPhone Xs, Xs Max, and XR this month while Apple Watch and Huawei Watch will be available soon.

Globe customers with eSIM-enabled devices can get QR cards at Globe Stores and scan it using their phones to activate their SIM before the end of this year.

The eSIM is currently available in 10 countries, including the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and Singapore. (PR)
