MIAA chief orders probe of complaint vs. wheelchair attendant

MANILA -- Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) General Manager Ed Monreal has ordered a probe of a complaint that a wheelchair attendant allegedly asked money from an elderly passenger. 

Monreal said on Wednesday he had received a complaint that a wheelchair attendant asked PHP3,300 from an elderly passenger from the United States. The money was apparently for the use of the wheelchair.

The unidentified passenger arrived last month, based on the report that Monreal received.

The airport chief ordered an investigation and asked authorities to review the CCTV footages.

Philippine Airlines (PAL) spokesperson Cielo Villaluna told the Philippine News Agency (PNA) that as of Wednesday afternoon, PAL has not received any complaint regarding such incident.

"We have yet to receive an official complaint on the alleged incident. Once we receive it, we will take the necessary action to prevent this from happening," said Villaluna, adding that PAL's wheelchair attendants are under the administrative jurisdiction of a third-party service provider.

"If the story is true that one of them indeed carried out such action, we will coordinate with the service provider, so the proper disciplinary actions or measures can be carried out on said member of their ranks. But until now, no such official complaint has been made," she said.

Villaluna said they cannot yet conduct an investigation, as no one has reported the incident to PAL and "the passenger was not even identified." (PNA)
