Jardeleza richest, Leonen poorest among SC magistrates

MANILA -- Supreme Court (SC) Associate Justice Francis Jardeleza remains the wealthiest member of the High Court while Associate Justice Marvic Leonen is at the opposite end.

Based on the summary report of the 2017 Statement of Assets, Liabilities and Net Worth (SALN) of the SC magistrates released Tuesday, Jardeleza has a net worth of PHP261,076,233.

Leonen, meanwhile, had the lowest net worth of only PHP2,964,314, an increase from 2016's PHP2.485-million. His declared real properties were at PHP3.4 million while personal property increased to PHP3.1 million from PHP2.6 million in 2016. His liabilities are worth PHP3.6 million.

Joining Jardeleza on the list of the wealthiest magistrates are Associate Justice Mariano del Castillo, followed by Associate Justice Alfredo Benjamin Caguioa, Senior Associate Justice Antonio Carpio and Associate Justice Estela Perlas-Bernabe.

Jardeleza, who jointly filed his SALN with wife Concepcion, saw his declared net worth increase from PHP249 million in 2015 to PHP252,165,867 in 2016.

Jardeleza's real property remained at PHP58.9 million while his personal property increased from PHP193 million to PHP202.1 million with no liabilities declared.

Next to Jardaleza is del Castillo with a net worth of PHP141,540,867 from PHP138.9 million in 2016. The value of his real properties increased from PHP50.9 million to PHP57.3 million while personal property decreased from PHP88.4 million in 2016 to PHP84.7 million in 2017 with liabilities worth PHP558,134.

The third richest SC justice is Caguioa with a net worth of PHP123,800,000, PHP2.250 million higher from PHP121.5 million in 2016.

The value of his real properties increased from PHP40.8 million in 2016 to PHP60.8 million in 2017 while personal property decreased PHP80.7 million in 2016 to PHP63 million in 2017 with no liabilities.

Carpio is fourth on the list with a net worth of PHP105,878,242, which was PHP23.2-million higher from PHP82.6 million in 2016. His real properties remain pegged at PHP38.3 million while personal property increased to PHP67.5 million from PHP44.4 million in 2016 with liabilities worth PHP75,000.

On the other hand, the net worth of Perlas-Bernabe went up by PHP3 million from PHP78.2 million in 2016 to PHP81,299,650 in 2017. Her real properties are worth PHP55.7 million compared to PHP53 million in 2016 while personal property is at PHP25.5 million with no liabilities.

She was followed by Associate Justice Diosdado M. Peralta whose net worth went up from PHP43.5 million in 2016 to PHP48,209,650 in 2017. His real properties are now valued at PHP25.4 million from PHP24.2 million in 2016 while personal property increased to PHP22.7 million from PHP19.3 million in 2016 with liabilities worth PHP50,000.

Peralta, during his interview with the Judicial and Bar Council (JBC), said his net worth increased because it was jointly filed with his wife, Court of Appeals Associate Justice Fernanda Lampas-Peralta.

He added that it also accumulated because of his chairmanship of the Bar examination committee and also due to his being part of the electoral tribunal.

Next to Peralta is Associate Justice Lucas P. Bersamin with a net worth of PHP44,445,828 in 2017, which was PHP3.1-million higher from his 2016 net worth of PHP41.2 million. His real properties remain pegged at PHP33.1 million while personal property increased from PHP26.1 million in 2016 to PHP29.2 million in 2017 with liabilities worth PHP18 million.

Retired SC justice and now Ombudsman Samuel Martires had a net worth of PHP41, 878,000. His real properties are valued at PHP13.3 million while his personal properties are at PHP28.5 million with no liability.

Meanwhile, ousted Chief Justice Maria Lourdes P. Sereno declared an increase in net worth to PHP27,340,711 in 2017 from PHP24.2 million in 2016. Her real properties increased from PHP7.9 million in 2016 to PHP8.7 million in 2017 while personal property also increased from PHP16.8 million to PHP18.6 million with liabilities worth PHP252,017.

Recently retired Associate Justice Presbitero J. Velasco Jr., declared a net worth of PHP22,081,205 in 2017, PHP4.3 million higher from PHP17.7 million in 2016. His real properties remained at PHP1.3 million while his personal property went up to PHP20.7 million from PHP16.3 million in 2016 with no liabilities.

Retired Chief Justice Teresita Leonardo De Castro's net worth increased by PHP2 million to PHP19,766.075 from PHP17.7 million in 2016. Her real properties remain valued at with PHP11.7 million while her personal properties increased to PHP20.7 million from PHP17.6 million in 2016. She has liabilities worth PHP9 million.

Associate Justice Noel G. Tijam's net worth increased by PHP3.3 million to PHP19,101,193 in 2017 from PHP15.7 million in 2016. His real properties are valued at PHP4 million while his personal properties are at PHP15.1 million. His liability is at PHP5,235.

Newly-appointed magistrate Alexander Gesmundo ranked 13th among the richest justices with a net worth of PHP8,245,894 with personal properties valued at PHP8.5 million and a PHP311,755 liability while Andres Reyes, also newly-appointed, has a net worth of PHP5,699,621 with a PHP1 million worth of real property and PHP6.6 million worth of personal properties and liability of PHP1.9 million.
