MANILA -- Members of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Police Intelligence and Investigation Division have recently apprehended a notorious "Salisi".

Airport police Senior Insp. Nemencio Bawalan told the Philippine News Agency (PNA) on Wednesday that suspect, Rhey Asumbrado, has victimized at least two passengers in a span of five days.

Asumbrado is included in the Airport Police Department's list gallery of "Salisi" suspects.

"Salisi" is a modus operandi where criminals distract their victim, making the commission of the crime unnoticed.

Bawalan narrated that a manhunt operation against Asumbrado was set when passenger Richard Ruiz sought help from authorities after his bag was stolen near a shop at NAIA Terminal 3 last January 10.

A CCTV footage and a gallery of "Salisi" suspects was shown to Ruiz. He pinpointed Asumbrado as the thief.

Operatives went to Asumbrado's last known address but failed to see him.

"(Asumbrado) was apprehended on Feb. 7, 2018 based on a complaint of a departing passenger. He was brought to the BJMP in Pasay, but was freed last December 17 because the complainant failed to attend the hearing," Bawalan said.

His previous case was dismissed, Bawalan added.

Incidentally, while the manhunt operation was ongoing, airport police officers heard someone shout, "Don't touch my bag!", in NAIA Terminal 3 last January 14.

They were able to chase the suspect, and positively identified Asumbrado.

The suspect was brought to the PIID office. Some of the items that Ruiz earlier enumerated as the contents of his bag, were recovered from Asumbrado that day.

These items were used as evidence.

Currently, Asumbrado is detained at the PIID Detention Cell.

Bawalan said they are waiting for the issuance of inquest resolution from the Pasay City Prosecutor's Office.

Asumbrado was charged with theft, grave threat, resisting arrest and unjust vexation, Bawalan added. (PNA)
