MANILA -- The Chinese Embassy in Manila donated 50 units of electric motorcycles to the government of Manila during a handover ceremony held at the Manila Police District (MPD) headquarters.
The donation was in line with the 118th founding anniversary of the Manila Police District.
According to the Embassy, the motorcycles, worth around USD180,000 or approximately PHP9,452,700, reflect China's efforts "to effectively assist the capacity building of the Manila Police and to fulfill Mayor (Joseph) Estrada’s advocacy of a green and clean city”.
Ambassador Zhao Jianhua extended his sincere gratitude and appreciation to the people and the government of Manila City, particularly the Manila Police officers, for their valuable support and assistance during the successful state visit of President Xi Jinping to the Philippines last November.
“After the landmark state visit of President Xi Jinping, we have every reason to expect even greater development of the practical cooperation between China and the Philippines in various sectors, which is bound to bring more tangible benefits to the two people in the days to come,” he said.
Estrada thanked the Embassy for the donation noting it will "greatly benefit" the MPD in their capabilities of patrolling the streets, preventing criminal activity, and securing the safety of the public.
“With this donation, the MPD will be a stronger force, better able to ensure peace and order in our city streets, and with this, we move closer to our goal to recapture Manila’s former glory, and be the Pearl of the Orient once again,” Estrada said.
During a speech, Zhao also conveyed Beijing's condolences to the victims of the recent bombings that occurred in Jolo, Sulu, and conveyed sympathies to the bereaved families and those injured.
Zhao reiterated that China would stand firmly with the Philippine government and people in support of President Duterte’s efforts to maintain peace and stability in the Philippines. (PR)
