MANILA -- The suspect in the alleged rape of a Filipina household service worker in Saudi Arabia is now in the custody of local authorities upon the request of the Philippine Consulate General in Jeddah, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) confirmed Tuesday.

The suspect, a Saudi national representing the victim's recruitment agency, allegedly raped the Filipina multiple times.

According to Consul General Edgar Badajos, the victim was fetched from the Consulate shelter after the suspect assured the Philippine Overseas Labor Office (POLO) that she will be transferred to another employer.

Instead of taking her to the new employer, the agency representative took the victim to a hotel where she was allegedly raped.

The victim was able to contact the POLO, which came up with an excuse for the suspect to bring her back to the Consulate. Badajos said the suspect was arrested at the Consulate.

The Consulate General is assisting the victim in filing a complaint, securing a medico-legal endorsement, and collecting the necessary evidence from the hotel management. (PNA)
