MANILA -- All 27 Filipinos residing in Havana were reported safe by the Philippine government after a tornado wreaked havoc at the Cuban capital, killing three and injuring 172 others.

"According to the Philippine Embassy in Mexico, there are no Filipinos among those who lost their lives or were injured by the tornado that struck Havana on Monday," Foreign Affairs Assistant Secretary Elmer Cato said in a text message on Tuesday.

On January 28, a tornado, classified as EF4 on the Enhanced Fujita Scale, ripped through the eastern part of Havana, toppling trees and damaging dozens of infrastructures.

According to reports, the twister -- the worst in recent years -- also caused coastal flooding and power outage in poor areas. (PNA)
