Thailand tops SEA Youth Athletics tourney in Isabela

CITY OF ILAGAN, Isabela – Thailand athletes romped away with 16 gold medals to emerge overall champion of the 14th Southeast Asian Youth Athletics Championships held at the City of Ilagan Sports Complex here on Sunday.

Aside from the golds, the Thai young athletes garnered eight silvers and four bronzes, owing it to their determination to win the championships.

"It is practice and dedication for us to win the championships," Thailand team manager Laphassaporn Tawoncharoen said in an interview with GMA7.

She commended the hospitality that host Ilagan showed throughout the tournament from March 1 to 3.

Meanwhile, host Philippines finished fifth with only three golds, seven silvers and nine bronzes behind Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia and Indonesia.

Vietnam placed second with 7-9-10 (gold-silver-bronze) tally followed by Malaysia (4-4-2), Indonesia (4-2-2), Singapore (2-3-6), Timor Leste (1-3-1) and Brunei without any medal.

Hakett Delos Santos, a 16-year-old Grade 10 student of the Sta. Isabel National High School in Ilagan City, bagged the last gold at stake after winning the pole vault with a 4.20-meter performance.

Santos bested Singaporeans Elliott Wee Jun who cleared 4.10-m for silver, and Heng Jee Kuan with 3.8-m mark for bronze. (PNA)
