MANILA — Philippine Southeast Asian Games Organizing Committee chairman Alan Cayetano is batting for a specialized high school that will cater to young athletes after the 2019 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games.

"Individually, with [Philippine Olympic Committee] chairman [Bambol] Tolentino and [Philippine Sports Commission] chairman [Butch] Ramirez, I pushed the idea that after the games, we might want to have a national sports high school," Cayetano said in a press conference regarding the country’s preparation for the said biennial meet at Max's Kabisera in Taguig on Saturday.

The former senator and Foreign Affairs secretary was inspired by the other specialized schools in proposing the sports high school.

"Kung may (if there is) military school at school for the arts, where after elementary, you move into a specialized high school na magfo-focus sa (that will focus on) specific training with modern technology, money, etc... we can do that too," Cayetano said.

One of the specialized high schools in the Philippines is the Philippine Science High School System, which he lauded.

"[PSHS] is really doing good, especially sa (in) engineering, sciences, and math," Cayetano said.

Other specialized schools include the Philippine High School for the Arts in Los Baños, the Philippine Military Academy in Baguio, and the Philippine National Police Academy in Silang.

Both the PMA and the PNPA, however, require their applicants to be at least high school graduates.

The closest thing to a sports high school right now is the sports track in senior high school, but it is the track with the smallest number of students all over the country. (PNA)
