ZAMBOANGA CITY -- The Office of the City Agriculturist has allocated PHP2.75 million for the implementation of an urban gardening project here.

Carmencita Sanchez, city agriculturist, told the Philippine News Agency (PNA) on Wednesday the fund will be used to purchase the needed seeds and organic fertilizer, and conduct the training of the project’s target beneficiaries.

Sanchez said the project aims to strengthen backyard and container gardening and will be initially implemented in 30 of this city’s 98 barangays.

She said 100 families in each of the 30 barangays will be identified as beneficiaries of the project.

“These beneficiaries will be trained on how to conduct backyard and container gardening,” Sanchez said.

“They will plant fast-growing vegetables, such as pechay, which they can immediately benefit (from),” she added.

Sanchez said the project is also to ensure a steady supply of organic vegetables currently in demand locally. (PNA)
