BACOLOD CITY -- At least 20,000 pilgrims are expected to visit the Holy Mountain in Isabela, Negros Occidental this Holy Week.
Previously known as the Glory Hill, the site is home to a 45-foot cross preceded by the 14 Stations of the Cross located in Sitio Mantuhod of Barangay Mansablay.
Mayor Joselito Malabor said on Wednesday the influx of visitors is expected between Holy Thursday and Holy Saturday.
“Many of those who come, stay overnight in the mountain. Most of the pilgrims are church groups from nearby towns and cities,” he added.
The mayor said the safety and security of the visitors is ensured under the watch of policemen and members of the Barangay Peacekeeping Action Teams.
The area is well-lighted at night by the beams coming from the giant cross and from other lighting equipment installed in the area, he added.
Earlier, Malabor said with some developments and promotional efforts, the number of tourists is expected to increase this year.
The Holy Mountain is being pushed as a destination to further boost the tourism industry of Isabela, as well as provide livelihood opportunities for the locals.
The proposed PHP350-million site improvement and infrastructure development for the Holy Mountain is part of the PHP2.5-billion proposed five-year tourism development plan of the municipal government.
The development plan is still up for the approval of the Department of Tourism.
Malabor said the municipal government, using its own funds, has implemented initial improvements like additional steps and trails.
From the previous two-hectare parking space, a seven-hectare vacant lot has been set up as a parking area this year. (PNA)
