ZAMBOANGA CITY -- Candidates in the Sulu province's second district signed a peace covenant to ensure orderly and peaceful elections, a military official said Thursday.

Col. Gerry Besana, Western Mindanao Command (Westmincom) information officer, said the peace covenant was initiated by the Marine Battalion Landing Team-3 (MBLT-3) in coordination with the local police.

Besana said the signatories of the covenant, which was held Tuesday in Panglima Estino town, were the candidates of the 11 municipalities in the second district of Sulu.

The peace covenant signing was also participated in by representatives from the Commission on Elections, Department of Education, religious leaders, aside from the aspirants for the 2019 mid-term election.

Besana said the activity aims to ensure a peaceful, orderly, honest and credible election on May 13, 2019 in the said district of Sulu.

Lt. Gen. Arnel dela Vega, Westmincom commander, said: “Our primary concern is the safety and protection of the electorates. We sought the oath of the candidates to be united, for a peaceful and orderly election.” (PNA)
