MANILA -- A Taiwanese fugitive using a tampered Philippine passport was apprehended at the terminal 1 of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), the Bureau of Immigration announced on Monday.
Immigration Port Operations Division Chief Grifton Medina identified the Taiwanese as Huang Chung-Chia who was arrested while attempting to flee the country via a Philippine Airlines flight bound for Phnom Penh, Cambodia on May 3.
“He is currently in our detention facility pending his deportation to Taiwan,” said Medina in a statement.
Medina noted that Huang has a pending deportation case stemming from a request of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) to locate the Taiwanese fugitive.
Taiwanese authorities said Huang is wanted for fraud by the Taichung district prosecutor’s office.
“TECO also informed us that his passport was already revoked, making him an undocumented alien,” Medina said.
Huang assumed the identity of a certain Louis Go Lu whose passport and other identification cards with substituted photographs were found in his possession.
“However, his real identity was discovered when he surrendered a non-professional driver’s license with his real name and date of birth on it. He then admitted that he is actually a Taiwanese national, and that he bought his Philippine passport from a fixer for PHP130,000,” Medina said.
The Taiwanese came to the Philippines as a tourist and had been hiding in the country since June last year. (PNA)
