DAVAO CITY -- The Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency-Region 11 (PDEA-11) has stepped up its anti-drug abuse and prevention awareness campaign with the distribution of 2,000 copies of comics to the students of Buhangin Central Elementary School on Wednesday.

The activity was part of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking (Idadait) commemoration, said Nephi Noli Dimaandal, PDEA-11 spokesperson.

"The comic strips are words and pictures that work together, exposing the readers to the anti-drug campaign being undertaken by the government that would better equip the students to resist drugs," Dimaandal said, adding the comics are in English and Filipino versions.

Dimaandal said drug use remains prevalent in the country and drug peddling by syndicates has taken many forms, including the use of minors. This was the reason, he said, that PDEA-11 targeted the children to raise their awareness on the problem.

He said adolescents or teenagers remain the most vulnerable and most targeted demographics in relation to the drug trade and illegal drug use.

A story in the PDEA comics talks about a jeepney driver who wanted to have the best for his family. Everything seems fine at first until financial constraints forced the father into drug use.

Another story is about an Overseas Filipino Worker who wanted to provide for the family, but whose son was caught for selling drugs.

Dimaandal said the stories feature challenges, struggles, and the triumphs of former drug dependents.

PDEA Director General Aaron Aquino, who launched the PDEA comics, said the material is meant to educate the children and the public on the prevalence of illegal drugs.

"Telling real-life stories through text and images create scenarios that people face and channel thoughts to construct a better picture of how we behave and handle the crisis that inevitably happens," Aquino said.

"I am honored to endorse these comics to help increase awareness and give a deeper understanding of the various initiatives and programs undertaken by the government to address the drug problem," he added. (PNA)
