Former Basilan town treasurer killed

ZAMBOANGA CITY --Motorcycle-riding gunmen shot and killed a former town official in the province of Basilan, a police official disclosed Tuesday.

Lt. Col. William Gadayan, Isabela City police chief, identified the victim as Hadji Hataan Mundi Astanan, the former municipal treasurer of Sumisip, Basilan.

Gadayan said the incident occurred around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday in Purok Moonlight, Barangay Sumagdang, Isabela City, Basilan’s capital.

Investigation showed that Astanan was driving a motorcycle on his way home from the market when shot by one of two men riding tandem in a motorcycle, who tailed the victim.

He said the victim suffered multiple gunshot wounds and died instantanly. Recovered from the crime scene were four empty shells of .45 caliber pistol.

He said the suspects fled towards Barangay Cabunbata after the incident. (PNA)
